The number of homeless families increases massively in the time of summer. Many families have to move out of their shelters after their children have finished the school year. This is called “the summer surge” when people are kicked out of their house and become homeless. The article expected the number of homeless families to reach 10,000 in summer 2009. There are many reasons for summer homelessness including poor living income, high resources cost and the landlords are unlikely to hesitate as in winter time. Number of homeless families increase has led to the demand of temporary shelter during the summer. Many intake centers in New York have encounter the high number of applicants for shelter. However, the shelter that these centers provide is usually low quality and dirty.
This article shocks me because I always have the image of the US as a wealthy country where people are rich and living happily. However, after reading this article, I realize there is another face of the US, a poorer, less opportunistic side where people are not provided enough with their basic needs.
