Huong / How Many People Experience Homelessness?

The article is the report on the research conducted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors about people who have experienced homelessness. The survey is conducted through out 23 cities.
  • 12 out of 23 cities had to refuse people in need of shelter because there is not enough room
  • 10 cities have an increase in number of homeless families with children
  • 6 cities have an increase in number of homeless individuals

The homeless population is distributed as
  • 42% African-American
  • 39% White
  • 13% Hispanic
  • 4% Native American
  • 2% Asian
The average length of stay in emergency shelter is shorter for single men than single women and families. People who are in need of permanent supportive housing usually stay from 1 to 2 years.
  • 19% of single homelessness are victims of domestic violence
  • 13% are veteran
  • 2% are HIV positives
The estimate number of homeless people is varied over a period of time but it can go from 400000 to 3.5 millions people.
